Rio Secreto - Tops on Riviera Maya Things to Do List
Rio Secreto Underground River Riviera Maya, Mexico

This is what you'll see while exploring Rio Secreto's underground river in Riviera Maya, Mexico

Driving south from Cancun along the only real highway, we saw billboards urging us to visit the underground river in the caves at Rio Secreto. Our initial reaction was "there's another hokey tourist trap" on the Riviera Maya and Cancun 'things to do' attractions list.

How wrong we were! Walking, and at times swimming in the river that flows through this semi-flooded cave, was one of the highlights during this trip to Mexico's Riviera Maya. Touring Rio Secreto you see the wonders of a section of Mexico's longest underground cave system in a natural, untouched state.

The section of cave in this photo was illuminated to take a photograph, because it beautifully shows the environment visitors will experience. However, as you travel through the caves in a small group led by a guide the only lights will be the ones on the helmets you and others in the expedition are wearing.

My husband, who was a caver (spelunker) when he was younger and a bit more crazy, was awed by the condition of the formations and the entire experience.
