How wrong we were! Walking, and at times swimming in the river that flows through this semi-flooded cave, was one of the highlights during this trip to Mexico's Riviera Maya. Touring Rio Secreto you see the wonders of a section of Mexico's longest underground cave system in a natural, untouched state.
The section of cave in this photo was illuminated to take a photograph, because it beautifully shows the environment visitors will experience. However, as you travel through the caves in a small group led by a guide the only lights will be the ones on the helmets you and others in the expedition are wearing.
My husband, who was a caver (spelunker) when he was younger and a bit more crazy, was awed by the condition of the formations and the entire experience.
