KeepYouSafe.com is a new company with a great concept: Keep copies of your travel documents and vital records safe in an online safety deposit box. If you lose your passport, or your wallet is lifted from a pocket while walking down the street in a foreign country, don’t sweat. Just go to a cybercafe and visit KeepYouSafe.com, where you’ve filed backup copies of travel documents and other vital records before leaving home.
You already know that it’s important to travel with copies of your passport and key documents, but using an online safety deposit box gives another route for the safe keeping of backup copies of important documents.
How Much Does It Cost?
The basic Online Safe Deposit Box is free for a limited time. According to the Web site, consumers who sign up now for the free service will not be billed even after the service moves to a paid mode, unless they opt to upgrade their service plan. Consumers with a box can also use KeepYou Safe’s secure file transfer service to send and receive sensitive documents that contain information that should be encrypted when traveling through cyberspace.

Consumers who sign up for a box create their own passwords. Two-factor authentication to log into an account is available.
Technology Used to Keep Documents Secure
The company claims all information is encrypted using the same encryption technology that the U.S. military employs to protect sensitive data. (On the Web site there’s a technical white paper which discusses the encryption technology.) According to the technical paper, the company uses "Secure Hash Algorithm 512 bit (SHA-512) to calculate a mathematical representation of your password called a "hash" so that when you log in we can verify you. This hash, and NOT your password is stored in our secure database."
The KeepYouSafe Online Safe Deposit Box service is provided by Information Survival, LLC, a New York-based start-up company that was launched in January, 2007. The security they claim to be using is sound, but I have not validated these claims or the background of the company’s staff. I leave this up to the reader to do so before utilizing the company’s services.
