"Take in the Outdoors" is the theme for the 17th annual National Trails Day, June 6, 2009. It's an open invitation for outdoor enthusiasts to join in the more than 1,500 events planned around the country. You can go hiking, biking, kayaking, horseback riding, bird watching, running and help with trail maintenance, for starters.

This annual event is a long-standing celebration of America's trail system and its countless supporters and volunteers. Many of the activities involve trail maintenance and improving routes for people who love to explore the outdoors. It's also your chance to connect with local hiking clubs, retailers who sell outdoor equipment, and find out more about local , state and federal parks near you.

To find an activity or event near you, visit the American Hiking Society's National Trails Day website.
