Machu Picchu is an archeological wonder located high in the Peruvian Andes that attracts an endless stream of tourists. Archeologists believe it was built between 1460 and 1470 as a royal palace and a religious retreat. When occupied by the Inca ruler, Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui, Machu Picchu had some 200 buildings -- built with granite blocks put together without mortar.
Several tour operators offer trips to Peru, which include a visit to Machu Picchu.
