Is it time for you to take a vacation where you can think of yourself first? A vacation that doesn't include dealing with kids, a husband or work? If so, you’re a prime candidate for a girlfriends getaway. A new television show, All-Girl Getaways, shows you the type of adventurous trips other women are planning, along with tips to make it easy for you and your female friends to plan a vacation. The show chronicles the planning for and actual girlfriends getaways to such diverse locales as a Wyoming dude ranch, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Hawaii. The coolest thing about the show is the adventures and experiences the women are enjoying, such as barrel racing in a rodeo, working in a watery taro field, and learning to surf.
“The show is confirming that women really need to get out there with their girlfriends and take a break from all the responsibilities at home,” says Stephanie Oswald, the show’s host who is also editor-in-chief of Travelgirl magazine. To do this, the show follows a different group of women each week through the planning stages and the actual weekend getaway. You'll see how they go about planning their escapes, from deciding who chooses the restaurants and who picks the hotels, to giving husbands advice on caring for the kids and telling fellow workers they'll be turning off their PDAs. Then, you experience the getaway with the women travelers.
Who stars in the All-Girl Getaways shows?
None of the “stars”of the show are famous but you’ll relate to many of them. “These are real adventures. These women planned these trip and had the trips in motion before we came along,” Oswald explains. The groups of women were chosen from responses to a casting call by the production team. The vetting included interviews and responses to essay questions about the reasons for the trip, the planning and the motivation for the trip. One of the groups has been traveling together since the women were 16-years-old. Another group is celebrating the fact that one member survived breast cancer. A third group of women are scientists who wanted to be unplugged for awhile.
Tell me about specific shows
There will be 13 shows this season. While some involve lots of pampering in spa and luxury lodging, others are more adventurous. "Discovering Your Inner Cowgirl" - Not Just for Men Anymore! follows four horse lovers who head to a dude ranch to try barrel racing and actually participate in a rodeo. In "Surf and Safari" to San Diego - A Sanity Check!, four thirtysomethings learn how to surf and party hard. During "Kiss Your Twenties Goodbye" on Lake Tahoe - With a First Time for Everything!, a group of women celebrating their 30th birthdays and ten years of winter vacations together try skiing for the first time.
All-Girl Getaways is a spin-off from Travelgirl magazine
“The concept for All-Girl Getaways is really exciting because it puts the travel girl attitude on the air,” says Oswald, relating that the Fine Living Network people came to her because they liked the magazine. The magazine focuses on the “escape factor” through travel to nearby and exotic locations. To quote a line from the magazine’s website: This is a magazine for women on the go and the men who travel with them—as well as any children or pets who might be along for the ride!”

The first All-Girl Getaways is Thursday, April 24 at 9 pm EST. After the debut show, All-Girl Getaways moves to Wednesday nights at 9pm EST.
