If you're an adrenaline junkie, South Africa is the place to explore. Your adventure travel experiences are only limited by how much your body can handle. In addition to taking a safari (in a jeep or on the back of an elephant)you can go ziplining, fly a MIG jet, horseback ride among vineyards and much more. You can also hurtle toward the water during a bungy jump from one of the world's highest bridges, fly a MIG jet, surf in barrel tubes, dive with sharks, and go kloofing, canyoneering, abseiling and sandboarding.
Then, there are the tamer adventure travel choices. Why not go mountain biking or horseback riding from one vineyard to another. Take a photo safari in Kruger National Park, hike on trails up to the lighthouse atop Cape Hope in Table Mountain National Park or go river rafting.
It's easy to base yourself in one of the cities, where the soccer games will be played, or if you just want upbeat urban lifestyle evenings. All of the adventures mentioned above, with the exception of safaris, can be day tripping from either Cape Town or Port Elizabeth, obth sites for the soccer matches. But, while you're visiting South Africa for the World Cup soccer games, allot time for a safari.
Air Sports
Abseil Africa offers a variety of adventures. While most people drive up Table Mountain to enjoy the view, adventurous travelers can rappel down the steep side of the mountain instead of driving down. This company also takes people to Kamizaki Kanyon for kloofing, radical abseiling, cliff jumping and more. Visit
Abseil Africa for details on all these adventures. You can fly along a zip line,go bungy jumping, jet boating and scuba diving in
Tsitsikama Coastal National Park. If you've always wanted to pilot a plane, you can
fly a MIG jet at Thunder City in Cape Town.
Cage Shark Diving
If you want to see sharks up close, head to
Shark Alley for cage diving. You'll be inside the cage, which has thick bars, while the sharks are on far side swimming around you. (The cages float and are partly out of the water, so you don't have to be a certified scuba diver.) The sharks gather in this channel of water that flows between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock because they like to lunch on the thousands of cape fur seals on Dyer who like to swim in these waters.
Water Sports Near Port Elizabeth and in Tsitsikamma National Park
The line of surfers carrying their boards passed by me, as I walked toward the beach just a block from my hotel in Port Elizabeth. "Surfs up" seems to spread by osmosis in this town that edges the ocean. If you want to go jet boating, snorkeling or diving, head to
Tsitsikamma Coastal National Park (where you'll also find a 10-zipline adventure and one of the world's highest a bungy).
Water Sports Near Cape Town
Water lovers, from kitesurfers and body surfers to waterskiers, wakeboarders and sailers head to the Langebaan Lagoon ,about an hour from Cape Town. Much of the lagoon is sheltered, so it's an excellent place to learn to windsurf, but you'll also find some of the world's best freestyle surfers training here.
Langebaan is located in South Africa's West Coast National Park. Contact
Cape Sports Center for water sports activities in Langebaan Lagoon.
Cape Town Offers Lots of Adventures
If you want to park in an interesting city and do day-trip adventures, visit
