Spot Satellite Messenger Doubles as Personal Tracker and Alert 911
Use SPOT to check in with friends, get emergency help, or track your progress

By , About.com Guide

"One wrong move and your adventure becomes tragic. A push of a button and it becomes dinner conversation." This is just one of messages that flashes on the findmespot.com home page, where you can learn about the revolutionary SPOT Satellite Messenger, which has both message and tracking functions that enable users to send messages to friends, family or emergency responders.

Almost every week, whether winter or summer, there's a TV piece about someone lost in the woods while hiking, climbing, snowmobiling or cross country skiing in the back country. The Spot Satellite Messenger will be a valuable tool for outdoor enthusiasts, especially those in remote areas or on the water. It has several functions that let you keep a line of communication open independently of cellular coverage. Alert 9-11 dispatches emergency responders to an exact location."Ask for Help" sends a request for help to friends and family. "Check In" lets contacts know where you are and that you are okay. Track Progress sends and saves your location and allows contacts to track your progress using Google Maps.

The SPOT Satellite Messenger weighs a bit more than 7 ounces, uses AA-size lithium batteries, has a waterproof construction and floats. Cost is $150. It's available at FindMeSpot.com, REI and Cabela's.
