Use Vonage
Making a cheap international phone call isn't an oxymoron when I use the Vonage 'Time to Call' app on my iPhone. I tested the Vonage "Time to Call" iPhone app while in Mexico.

It proved easy to use and my voice came through clearly according to the people I called. Most of all, it was great knowing I'd talked for almost ten minutes and would only be charged 99 cents! (It was truly a cheap international phone call, especially when compared to the 59 cents a minute my carrier charges to call the U.S. from Mexico.)

Make Several Calls Within Your 15 Minutes for $1.99

Basically, you're buying 15 minutes worth of international phone calling time for a very low price. Suppose you're going to visit a resort on the Riviera Maya near Cancun in Mexico and you want to call ahead to make reservations at two different restaurants. From the U.S., $1.99 buys 15 minutes of calling time to Mexico and to many other countries - and you can make as many calls in that 15 minutes as you like.

While in Mexico, for 99 cents you can make 15 minutes worth of calls back to the U.S. It's time enough to call the kids and tell them you had fun caving and scuba diving, and to check with the kennel to make sure your dog is having a good time at dog camp.

How to Make Cheap International Calls on Vonage Time to Call

Start by downloading the free app from the iTunes store.

Once it's on your iPhone, it's pretty self explanatory. Click on the country that you want to call. (Choices range from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, with more than a hundred other countries on the list between them.)

Then, just tap the buy button on the screen and dial the number you want to call. One of the coolest things about this app is that when you click on a country the required calling code automatically pops up.

When you're nearing the 15 minute mark, you are notified that your time is almost up , similar to a calling card. When the 15 minutes is up, you're cut off so there are no overage fees.

Payment for the calls is automatically billed directly to your iTunes account. You do need access to wifi to make the calls. In the U.S you can make the calls on 3G. Carrier charges may apply if you have a limited data plan.

The Time to Call app was a finalist in the 2011 Mobile Excellence Awards.

I've been pleased with the quality of the sound that comes out of the easy-to-carry Memorex PurePlay portable speaker, which comes in a slim, clutch-style case and doesn't take much room. It can take a reasonable beating stuffed in a suitcase or a back pack. You can use the speaker plugged in to an electrical outlet, or with batteries. Here's a review.
