Smartwool Hiking, Ski and Walking Socks

Which socks do you grab from your drawer every morning?

About.com Rating five out of Five

By Lois Friedland, About.com

Lately, I've noticed that I grab a pair of SmartWool socks in the morning and don’t wear any other brands until all of my Smartwool hiking, ski and walking socks are in the laundry basket. The socks are made of super-fine Merino wool that doesn't itch and it feels like I'm wearing soft bedroom slippers.

The Adrenaline models are the choice for active outdoor adventures

Adrenaline Socks: For hiking, running, mountain biking and most any other type of outdoor activity you can imagine. This rugged line of SmartWool socks is shaped so it won’t bunch up under your foot or droop. According to the company’s literature, these socks feature an anatomically designed Smart Fit System that includes a turn roll welt at the top of the sock, elasticized ankle and arch braces, and y-heel construction to keep the sock in place on your foot. I just know they fit well and don't bunch or droop in my walking shoes or hiking boots.

SmartWool's colorful lifestyle socks fit right into any city scene

SmartWool listened to its customers and in fall, 2007 put out a line of colorful or patterned lifestyle socks. Women who want oddball yet attractive looking pairs of socks should take a look. Some of the socks are made with bold contrasting colors, while others have interesting textures, such as tiny bumps, cable styling and even polka dots. The men’s line is equally comfortable, but most are more subdued in color. Heights range from bootie (doesn't show above the shoe) to knee-hi.

The yarn behind SmartWool's socks and clothing made of merino wool

According to the company literature, SmartWool works by regulating body temperature and moisture to keep you dry and comfortable. The crimped nature of SmartWool fibers creates thousands of tiny air pockets that work as insulation to keep you cool when it’s warn, and warn when it’s cool. All I can say after wearing a variety of pairs, and some ski long underwear is: It works! If you’re a hiker who’s on a multi-day trip in the woods and won't wash socks every night, you’ll be happy to know that SmartWool absorbs moisture into the fiber instead of moving it around the outside of the fiber and there’s no place odor causing bacteria can grow, so unlike synthetics (claims the SmartWool company), the socks won’t smell even after several wearings. (Must admit, I’ve never worn any of mine for more than a day before tossing them into the laundry basket, so I can't swear to this first-hand.)

No special care required for SmartWool socks

You really don’t have to do anything special, I discovered. The company claims the socks won’t shrink in the washer or dryer – and some of my pairs have been in the washer then dryer (on the permanent press setting) more than a dozen times and they still fit well. They didn’t shrink or compact, unlike some of my synthetic socks.

Other SmartWool Products

SmartWool also makes long underwear for skiing and snowboarding for adults, some kids clothing, hats and gloves, all using the merino wool. REI and other major sporting goods chains offer SmartWool products.
