Adventure.Travel Website: A Treasure Trove for Finding Trips

By Lois Friedland, About.com

If you're looking for a catch-all online directory of adventure tour operators, visit www.Adventure.Travel, the Adventure Travel Trade Association's (ATTA) new website. It's a comprehensive online directory for travelers who like to research where in the world they want to go and then check out dozens of adventure tour operators offering trips to the regions of specific interest.

The site is easy to use because you can search by global regions, a certain country or specific activities. Once you choose these, hit the search button and a choice of tour operators offering trips that match your wishes pops up. Each company listing has an overview of the locations where the operator runs trips, the types of activities offered and a link to the operator's website. You can then work directly with the tour operator to get detailed information about the trip and even book it.

Who's It For?

Anyone who is thinking about taking a trip that involves adventure travel because the activity list includes more than two dozen choices ranging from multisport, hiking, bicycling and climbing to horseback riding, hot air ballooning, cultural trips and voluntourism.

Special Features

Look for the Featured Destination reports that start on the home page. The reports are in-depth features about a specific locale, such as Engadin St. Moritz, one of Switzerland's largest snow sports regions. The article includes lots of information about the activities, plus information about how to get there and accommodations.

Toward the end of 2007, a consumer review section will be launched. Here's the place to rate companies and share details about trips actually experienced, which were booked through listed tour operators.

Who Are Your Experts?

The companies that pop up are a Who’s Who of adventure travel operators. All of the companies on the website are members of the ATTA, a Seattle-based organization dedicated to raising the profile of adventure travel globally. (With this goal in mind, ATTA runs an annual Adventure Travel Summit.)

ATTA's president Shannon Stowell explains why the site was developed: "The Internet has been good for consumer who want choices. However, sometimes there are too many choices and people need a helping hand in choosing the best operators. Typically, paid placement tends to secure top billing in online directories whereas Adventure.Travel delivers high quality , trusted tour operator listings affiliated with a respected global trade association."

On Adventure.Travel, participating businesses may not purchase their way to top listings but will rise in directory search ranking based on quality measures.
