Donate Old Gear to "Homeless Gear" & Help Keep the Homeless Warmer on Cold Days

Hikers, Backpackers & Campers: Your Old Gear Can Help Warm the Homeless

By , About.com Guide

Homeless Gear is a Colorado-based group run by active sports lovers who collect old gear and distribute it to the homeless. Have you upgraded tents, sleeping bags or warm high-tech clothes and now have an attic or garage stuffed with old gear? The homeless man, woman or family you may have seen lying under thin blankets as you walked by on a cold day could be a lot warmer wearing that old jacket hanging in your closet.

Where to Donate Gear

The group that runs Homeless Gear believe people would be more than happy to donate their unwanted gear to help the homeless - if they knew where to send it. If you live in Colorado, there's a list of local places on the Homeless Gear Web site where you can donate gear. If you live elsewhere in the U.S., the company will try to match gear to the community where you live. "There are homeless around the country, so for the most part we have been able to make matches between donors and facilities in their community that serves the homeless. When a donor contacts us, we do the research and "qualify" a facility or even two as close to the donor's location as possible. When we are sure that the facility will receive the item and give it to someone in need that they serve, we give that contact information to the donor (we never give the donor's information to the facility). The donor then has the freedom to take the product in to the facility if and when they choose to do so." explains Ken John, Homeless Gear's executive director.

How Gear Gets to The Homeless

Homeless Gear works with 25 homeless facilities or programs throughout Colorado to distribute the gear that is collected. "We also hold direct distributions at various locations each month and work with the homeless on a one on one basis (daily) to identify their needs and provide them with the appropriate gear to meet those needs." adds John. Donors in other states are matched with facilities in local communities.

Other Ways to Donate to Homeless Gear

Homeless Gear also works with corporate partners who donate gear. If you want to make a cash donation, Homeless Gear purchases items (gloves, socks, etc) to distribute. Homeless Gear is a program of the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado a nonprofit 501c3 organization. The group running Homeless Gear covers all of its operating costs, so everything that is donated goes to the homeless.
