Adventure races can turn vacations into realtiy TV-style trips

By Lois Friedland, About.com

While the Amazing Race TV series and Primal Quest may be the most well-known adventure races, there's a subculture of adventurous travelers who are participating in lesser known adventure races and competitions. These adventure races typically include a variety of athletic endeavors, often travel to foreign countries and above all testing one's self in challenging new situations.

Have you watched the Amazing Race and wondered if -- or were sure you could -- compete? If so, check out the annual Great Escape race, designed for globetrotters and adventurous travelers. The race starts in Los Angeles and ends in New York, but during the three weeks participants travel the long way around the globe.

2. Red Bull Crashed Ice Adventure Race on Skates in Quebec City

If you weren't a skilled enough skater and crazy enough to participate in the Red Bull Crashed Ice adventure race that’s literally carved into Quebec City, you can still enjoy the rush. Check out the videos and photographs.

3. Competitours is a Mini-Amazing Race for Travelers Who Love Adventure

Competitours is the ordinary adventure traveler’s version of the Amazing Race. If you want to turn your next vacation into a reality TV-style adventure, consider this amazing race for ordinary travelers.

4. Primal Quest - The Ultimate Adventure Race

Arguably one of the ultimate adventure travel races, the annual, always grueling Primal Quest is billed as an ecologically aware wilderness Expedition Adventure Race. Primal Quest is tackled by teams of four willing to fight their ways through a series of challenges.
