Pacuare Lodge packages focus on adventure - starting with the 1 1/2-hour rafting trip to reach the lodges. (If you don't want to arrive or leave by river raft, the Lodge has cleared a trail enough so 4X4 vehicles can bring you to the river, where you'll cross on a gondola suspended on steel hawsers, then take a short walk to the Lodge.)
During your stay, you can go on hikes through the emerald-hued rain forest led by a naturalist, spend a day on horseback, go canyoneering, or take a canopy tour riding on zip lines. You're situated in a mountainous region, with deep canyons and river tributaries. The rainforest's thick undergrowth provides shelter to jaguars, ocelots, monkeys, sloths, and numerous other species of mammals and birds.
Staying here is for the adventuresome traveler. The canopied king beds are comfortable and the windows are screened, but there's no electricity - lanterns and candles provide the light at night. After a day of exploring, clean up in a solar-heated shower. All of the bungalows and suites, and the main lodge, have been made from wood purchased from a sustainable reforestation project operated by and benefiting small local farmers.
