By , About.com GuideFebruary 8, 2013

Follow me on:

As the snow storms come in waves over the mountain ranges in the west, from California to Colorado the snowpack is unstable in many regions.  Weather forecasters and news anchors are warning listeners to be careful because the avalanche danger is so high.  A few backcountry skiers have been caught and died, and there have been close calls for snowmobile riders.

Click on Surviving an Avalanche for a list of organizations that monitor avalanches, and offer information and clinics to teach travelers who want to play in the backcountry about avalanche dangers.

You'll also find a link to an article about a man driving his car on a mountain road when snow slid, and how his backcountry knowledge helped him survive.
