Whitewater rafting on rivers in the East should be spectacular this spring, courtesy of the recent blizzards. Info about spring trips are flowing into my email box. Family-owned River Expeditions just announced dates for its annual whitewater season opener. The 28th annual Ice Breaker Weekend is April 10-11, and rafters should expect thrills and chills (wear a wet suit if you own or can borrow one) on the New River in the heart of West Virginia's New River Gorge National Park. Prices for this weekend's day trips are discounted, but the thrills are among the best of the river rafting season. By all accounts, West Virginia and other eastern states are bracing for a record run-off and monstrous spring melt which means that not only are their whitewater rivers going to be extremely exciting and challenging, but the water temps will be colder than normal.
I suspect neoprene is going to be essential early in the season, and a drysuit might be more suitable and a better insurance policy.
I would not be surprised if they will have extended periods (a week, maybe two) when rivers are raging and may be unsuitable for novice paddlers, even with commercial guides. It will be up to the commercial outfitters to know “when to hold’em, and when to fold’em”. Always a difficult decision for business owners.
