Surviving an Avalanche

Wednesday December 31, 2008
Parts of the Rocky Mountains have received almost 200 inches of snow already this year. Resorts in Sierra Nevada are measuring snowfall in feet, even through it's only the end of December. But the snows aren't stable, so weather forecasters and news anchors around the West are warning listeners to be careful because the avalanche danger is so high. Already, nine snowmobilers and a backcountry skier have died in different avalanches. Last year, a car was swept off a road, but the driver survived because he had avalanche survival training. Click on Surviving an Avalanche for a list of organizations that monitor avalanches, and offer information and clinics to teach travelers who want to play in the backcountry about avalanche dangers.
